Competitor research
See what your competitors run, find posts that work, and keep the ones you like.
Goose watches the brands you compete with and the ads they run. Ads that keep running for months are usually the ones making money, so they're good inspiration. You'll find all of this under Research, in four tabs: Competitors, Reports, Find posts and Saved.
Add a competitor
In the dashboard: open Research and choose Add a competitor. Give it a name and its website, if it has one. It shows as Added by you.
In your AI app: name a brand to watch, with its website. For example: "Watch Brand X, brandx.com." It waits under Goose suggests until someone chooses Watch, and then shows as Found by Goose. Choose Dismiss on the ones you don't want.
Found by Goose: when Goose first learns your brand in your AI app, it also looks on the web for up to five brands that sell the same kind of thing to the same people. They wait under Goose suggests on Research too.
Research a competitor
When Goose researches a competitor, it reads:
- their home page, with their logo, colors and fonts
- the ads they run in the Meta, Google, TikTok and LinkedIn ad libraries
- their Instagram and TikTok posts, and comments on them
- what people say about them on the web and on Reddit
- their app store and marketplace listings
- their blog
It needs the competitor's website to do this.
On Competitors, tick the ones to research and choose Research picked, or choose Research all. Goose researches up to 25 at a time. You can also open one, or use the … menu on its row, and choose Research now.
Under Anything you want to know? (optional) you can add a question, like "What offers do they run in October?", and Goose answers it at the top of the report. Then pick How far Goose reads:
- Standard read: free. Goose reads their site and their latest ads and posts.
- Deep read: Goose reads much further back. Each page it reads costs 1 credit. You set Most credits for each competitor, 50 to start and up to 5,000. Goose stops at your limit, and you pay only for the pages it read.
Choose Start research, or Start deep read for a deep read. A deep read can only be started on the Research page. Your AI app can start a standard read.
Research takes a little while. You can follow it in History, and the report lands in Reports.
Between reads, Goose reads their ads again every day, their posts and mentions every week, and their website every month, for free. It writes a new report only when you ask.
What you see
Open a competitor to see its Ads, Posts, Mentions and About tabs.
- Ads starts with how many ads Goose found, where they run and their longest run. Then come Running the longest and All their ads, newest first. If they advertise in more than one place, pick one under Where they advertise. Each ad says how long it has run. New marks ads Goose first saw this week, and Long runner marks ads that ran 60 days or more.
- Posts lists their posts, newest first.
- Mentions shows what people say about them, and the Comments under their posts and ads.
- About holds your notes, their details and their app store and marketplace listings. To add a missing website, fill it in under Details and choose Save details.
A competitor with no ads yet hasn't been researched, or runs no ads right now.
Save an ad or make your version
Each ad with a picture under All their ads has Save. It keeps a copy of the ad in your Library, under Ads, marked Saved from Ad Library, and under Saved in Research. It's free, and anyone on the team can do it. The button then says Saved; choose it to open the ad in the Library.
Picture ads also have Make my version. It saves the ad, then opens Make for an image ad that follows this ad's look. You see the price before you say yes, as usual.
Goose can follow a finished picture ad in a common ad shape, like square, 4:5, 9:16 or 16:9. If Goose can't follow an ad's layout, such as a Google text ad, Make my version still opens Make for an image ad, and Goose tells you to pick a look for your version.
In your AI app, ask "What are my competitors running?" Goose shows:
- the ads kept running longest, what each one says and how long it's run
- the patterns: the angles, hooks, formats and offers those long-running ads keep using
- the open ground: what none of them does that your brand can back up
Then it suggests one angle to try, and offers to make it as an image ad or a video.
Competitor ads are inspiration only. When you want an ad like a competitor's, Goose copies only the layout. The words, claims, offer and pictures all come from your own brand brain.
Reports
Reports shows what Goose found each time it studied your brand, a competitor, what customers say or your market, newest first. Each report is named for your question, or for what Goose looked at. Open one to read it. A report on a competitor has See their ads.
Find posts
Find posts searches Instagram and TikTok for posts on any topic. Enter What to look for, like "masala chai recipe", and pick Where, the Kind of post and when it was Posted. On TikTok you can also set the fewest views.
Choose See the price. Each page of posts from each place costs 1 credit, so searching both is 2 credits a page. Say yes to the price, and the posts show. You pay nothing for a place Goose couldn't read. Find more posts gets the next page, at a new price.
Past searches keeps your searches. See posts shows a search's posts again for free, and Search again gets the newest posts at a new price.
Saved
Choose Save on a post you found with Find posts, or on a competitor's ad, to keep it under Saved. Your AI app can also save ads you like there. Each saved item shows where it came from. You can:
- Add a note to say what you like about it
- read What's said in a saved video post, for free
- choose Make my version: a saved ad opens Make to follow it, and a saved post copies a request for your AI app
- Remove it, with Undo if you change your mind
Filter saved items by Everything, Posts or Ads, by platform, or by product.
Watch an account
Choose Watch an account and enter an Instagram or TikTok handle. Goose reads it within the hour, then every week, and shows new posts under New from accounts you watch. It's free. Choose Stop watching to stop.
Stop watching a competitor
When a brand isn't a competitor, open the … menu on its row and choose Stop watching. Switch from Watching to Stopped to see the brands you stopped watching, and choose Watch again to bring one back.
