Expand an ad
Turn an ad that works into a clean test. Each variation changes one thing you pick, for one price and one yes.
Pick an ad that's working, or a video you upload, and choose what to test: the hook, the product, the offer and more. The ad you start from is the control. Goose makes variations that change only what you picked and keeps everything else the same as the control. You see one price for the whole test and say yes once. When they're made, you can send them to Meta, paused, into the original ad's ad set.
What you can expand
- An image ad Goose made.
- A finished video Goose made.
- A video you upload, like UGC or a creator's or agency's video. See Expand a video you upload.
- A video ad already running on Meta. Goose brings it in and links it to its Meta ad.
Image ads that weren't made in Goose can't be expanded.
Start a test
In your AI app, ask in your own words, like "Make 5 new hooks for my best video" or "Test this ad with the saffron chai." Your AI app finds the ad you name. For "my best" or "my tired one", it offers your top Winning or Tired ad. If you don't say what to make, the card that asks What do you want to make? has Expand an ad. When you've named the ad, Goose goes straight to its parts.
In the dashboard, you can start from:
- Expand an ad, under What do you want to make? on Make or on Home. It lists your ads from the last 30 days that ran on Meta, the ones with the most results first: Made by Goose for image and video ads Goose made, and Videos from Meta for video ads made somewhere else. Each one shows Goose's call on it, like Winning, Steady or Tired, with its spend and cost per result, so you pick on how it does. Choose Make variations on a Goose ad, or Bring it in on a Meta video. Upload a video sits at the bottom.
- Make variations on an ad's or video's page in Library. It also works for a Goose ad that hasn't run on Meta yet. On a video you uploaded that Goose hasn't read yet, the button says Read it to make variations and opens it on Bring in a video first.
- Make variations on your best ad under Best and worst ads on Home, when it's a video or an image ad Goose made.
- Test 3 new hooks under Goose suggests on Results, when an image ad Goose made is tired or people have seen it many times. It opens with 3 hooks picked. On a video ad, the same suggestion shows Make variations.
- Make variations when you open an ad in Results. On a Meta video that isn't in Goose yet, it opens Bring in a video with that ad picked.
See the ad's parts
The Make variations page starts with the control and Its parts: what Goose read from the ad. This step is free.
- Image ad: the hook (the headline on the image), the product, the background, the offer, the CTA words, the Meta button, the headline and the size.
- Goose video: the hook's words on screen, its spoken line and its first shot, plus the voice, the product, the end card, the headline, the Meta button, the length and the size.
- Uploaded video: see Goose reads it.
Pick what to test
Under What to change, pick the things to change and how many of each, like "3 new hooks" and "2 other products". For hooks on an image, pick the angles to try: pain point, question, social proof, bold claim, offer, curiosity, or write your own. Then pick a Test type and choose Continue.
Image ads
| What changes | What you get |
|---|---|
| Hook | New words in the headline on the image. Their place and look stay the same. |
| Product | Another of your products, using its product photos. |
| Background | A new setting: a kitchen, a desk, outdoors, a studio, or your own idea. |
| Offer | One of the offers saved for your brand, in place of the ad's offer, or as a new badge when it has none. |
| CTA | New CTA words on the image. The Meta button stays the control's. |
| Ad copy | A new headline and main text on Meta. The picture stays the same. |
| Placement | The same ad in another size: Square (1:1), Upright (4:5) or Tall (9:16). Your AI app can also make Wide (16:9). |
Only products with product photos can go in. Offers come only from the ones saved in Brand.
Goose videos
| What changes | What you get |
|---|---|
| Text hook | New words on screen for the first 2 seconds, six words at most. |
| Verbal hook | A new first line, spoken in the video's own voice, six words at most. Every other scene is reused. |
| Visual hook | A new first shot. Some styles match every shot to the first one, so they remake the later shots too, and the price says so. |
| Voiceover | The whole video in another Goose voice. |
| End card and CTA | New end card words and a new Meta button. |
| Ad copy | A new headline, up to 40 characters, and main text, up to 125. |
| Placement | The same video in another size the style comes in. Each size is its own video. |
Music stays as the control has it: it isn't something you can test. A different creator or product on a video isn't something you can test.
One variable each, or every combination
- One variable each (recommended): each variation changes one thing, so every result tells you what worked. 3 hooks and 2 products make 5 variations.
- Every combination: every mix of your picks. 3 hooks and 2 products make 6 variations. You get more variations, but a win is harder to read. When a winner changed more than one thing, Goose says it can't tell which change did it.
A test makes up to 20 variations.
The test plan
Continue opens the test's page, named after the test. Every variation shows in one table under Test plan before you pay, with the control on top. What changes is marked, and everything else says "same". Each row shows what gets made and about what it costs.
- Type your own words into any row. Typing is free. On an image, you can leave the hook empty, and Goose writes it in that row's angle when it makes the ad.
- Add a variation adds one row. Write 3 more hooks adds three hooks from new angles. Add a placement adds a new size.
- × leaves a row out. Put back in the dashboard, or Undo on the card, brings it back.
- Goose checks every hook and line against your brand brain, and uses only the claims, reviews and offers saved for your brand. A row with something your brand can't back up is marked Needs a fix, with a fix to try, like "Your brand has no proof for this number. Use a real review instead?" Fix it or leave it out before you see the price.
On a video, some rows say "Priced when you see the price" until you do. In the dashboard, Write 3 more hooks on a video hands the writing to your AI app, the same way Many videos at once does, and your AI app adds the hooks to the plan.
One price, one yes
Choose See the price. You get one price for the whole test, in Goose credits. You see the price before you say yes, and nothing is made or spent until you do.
Image variations:
- You pay once for each variation that changes the picture, however many things it changes.
- A variation in a new size costs a resize, plus the change when it also changes the picture.
- Ad copy alone is free. A test of only ad copy costs 0 credits, and still waits for your yes.
- A variation Goose couldn't make costs nothing.
Video variations:
- You pay only for the new pieces Goose makes, like a new voice line or a new first shot. Words on screen, end cards, captions and putting each video together happen on your computer and cost nothing.
- Every scene that didn't change is reused from the control for free. The price says "Made for the control, reused free".
- When two variations need the same new piece, you pay for it once.
- When a change spreads to other scenes, the price shows it on its own line, like "Remakes 2 later shots because this style matches every shot to the first one". A new first line can also mean a new voice take for the next scene, when they're spoken in one take.
- If a piece made for the control is no longer kept, it's priced as new. You see that in the price before you say yes.
The price shows the most it can cost and the likely cost. Goose sets the credits aside when you say yes, charges what the work really uses, and gives the rest back on its own.
Say yes on the card in Claude or ChatGPT, under Price on the test's page in the dashboard, or at the link your AI app gives you. On a video test, the yes button reads like Make 5 videos, with the most it can cost, and the computer Goose makes them on. A yes typed in chat never spends credits. See Credits and plans.
If you change a row after you see the price, that price is cancelled, so an old card can't start an old plan. Choose See the price again. Once you say yes, the plan is fixed. To test more, iterate on a variation. A test you never say yes to costs nothing.
While they're made
Image variations are ready in minutes, and their review page opens after your yes. Video variations are made on your computer by Goose Video, like every Goose video. See Make it. Choose See the variations to follow them. Hook variations come back fast, because most of the video already exists.
If some video variations didn't get made, the test's page says how many, with See the price again to make them once more.
Review them
Each variation sits next to the control, labelled with what it changes, like "Hook: pain point".
- Choose Keep or Reject on each, or Keep all the rest. In the dashboard, press K to keep and X to reject.
- On a video test, Play the hooks back to back plays the first 3 seconds of every variation in a row, starting with the control. It's the fastest way to judge hooks.
- On an image variation, Fix (or F) copies a request for your AI app. The change is priced like any other change, and you say yes to it first. See Change an ad. Once the changed ad is ready, the variation uses it and keeps its place in the test.
- Only image variations can be fixed. A video variation can't be changed once it's made: reject it, and try a new take in a new test.
Every variation is its own ad in Library, named after the test, like "Bagged chai · V1 · hook: pain point".
Send to Meta
Sending to Meta is off for now
Until it's turned on for your account, the review page says "Changes to Meta are off for now, so Goose can't send these ads." Ask your AI app to pack the variations you kept for Ads Manager instead. Each pack holds one Meta button, so a variation that tests the button or the end card comes in its own pack. Each ad keeps its test name in the sheet. See Results and Meta.
When sending is on, choose Send to Meta below the variations, where you review them. It sends the variations you kept. If you kept none, it sends every finished variation you didn't reject.
- The variations go into the control's ad set, paused. They reach the same audience and share its budget. Goose doesn't make a separate test ad set.
- The control keeps running exactly as it is.
- It opens Send ads to Meta with the control's ad set filled in. Nothing goes to Meta until you say yes there.
- One send holds up to 10 ads and one Meta button. A bigger test, or one that tests the button, gets more than one send, with a button for each, like Send 4 ads with Shop now.
- Each ad's name follows one pattern, like "Bagged chai · V1 · hook: pain point", so you can filter for the test in Ads Manager.
- Meta spend is separate from Goose credits.
The control has to be running in an open ad set, in an ad account you've connected for sending. If it isn't, Goose says so before anything is sent.
Read the results
Ask your AI app how the test is doing. It gives you Goose's summary and a link to the test's results page in Results.
The results page shows the control and its variations side by side, over the last 7 full days, in the control's ad account and its currency: spend, results, cost per result or money back, click rate, and for videos, hook rate. Hook rate is how many of every 100 times the ad showed played its first 3 seconds.
Goose calls a winner only when a variation beats the control by at least 20% on what your account is judged on: money back, cost per sale, cost per lead or click rate. The control and the variation each need at least 10 sales, 10 leads or 100 link clicks in those 7 days, whichever your account counts. Until then it says "Too early" and what it still needs. The winner is marked Beat the control, with what changed, like "Only the hook changed, and V1 cut the cost per sale by 30%."
- Iterate on V1 starts a new test with V1 as the control. The old test stays as it was.
- Pause the control takes you to Results to find the control. Pausing it is a separate decision you make on its own.
- Save the learning keeps what you learned for your brand, so future ads start from what worked. It goes into your brand brain once you publish it in Needs you.
Expand a video you upload
Your best ad might be UGC from a creator, an agency edit, or a video you shot yourself. Bring it in, and Goose can test new hooks on it without a reshoot.
Bring it in
- In your AI app, say something like "Here's our best UGC ad, test new hooks on it." Your AI app gives you a link to the Bring in a video page in the dashboard, because chat apps can't send big video files.
- In the dashboard, choose Upload a video under Expand an ad, or open Library, then Videos, and choose Bring in a video. Drop in an MP4 or MOV file up to 200 MB, or choose Pick a file.
Tick I own this video or have the rights to use it in ads. Pick a file stays off until you tick it. Only you can tick it, on that page: your AI app can't tick it for you, and Goose never ticks it on its own.
To test hooks on it, an uploaded video must be 9:16, 4:5 or 1:1, at least 3 seconds long and under about 3 minutes. You can still bring in a video of another shape, but Goose can't swap its hook: export it in one of those shapes and bring it in again.
Under Ad copy, add the ad's headline, main text and button, the way you run it on Meta. You can leave them for later and add them on the test's page, under Your ad's copy, with Save copy. Goose can't price the test until your ad's copy, with its main text, is saved.
A video you upload from your computer isn't linked to its ad on Meta. Goose can make the variations, but it can't read the original ad's results or send the variations into its ad set. If the video already runs on Meta, choose Pick from my Meta ads instead.
Pick it from Meta
If the video already runs on Meta, choose Pick from my Meta ads on the Bring in a video page. Your Meta video ads lists the ones that aren't in your library yet, the biggest spend first. Choose Pick next to one. Bring it in under Expand an ad, or Make variations on a Meta video in Results, opens this page with that ad picked.
Tick the same box, then choose Bring it in. Goose downloads the video from Meta and brings in the ad's headline, main text and button exactly as they run, so the variations go out with the same words. It links the video to its Meta ad, so the test compares with the ad's real results, and the variations go into its ad set.
Goose can bring in videos up to 60 MB from Meta. A bigger one gets "This video is over 60 MB, so Goose can't bring it in from Meta. Download it from Ads Manager and upload it here." An ad that's already in your library can't be brought in twice.
Goose reads it
Keep the page open while Goose reads the video. It takes about a minute, and it's free. Under Scenes, Goose splits the video into scenes with their times, and marks the first 2 seconds as the Hook. Under What's said, it writes out what's said. The hook's parts are its words on screen, its spoken words and its first shot.
For a video over 25 MB, Goose can't write out what's said, so the hook shows only its words on screen and its first shot.
Then choose Expand this video, and set up the test like any other.
What you can test on it
Goose keeps your video and changes only what each row tests. After the first 2 seconds, your footage plays as it is, with its own sound.
| What changes | What you get | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Text hook | New words on screen over the first 2 seconds, six words at most. | Free |
| Hook clip | New first 2 seconds: a photo of your product, a clip from your own video clips, or a short clip Goose makes of a product | Free when silent. A spoken line in a Goose voice costs the line. A clip Goose makes costs the clip and its line. |
| End card and CTA | A closing card with your logo (or your brand name, if Goose has no logo) and up to 40 characters, and a new Meta button | Free |
| Placement | The video in another shape: 9:16, 4:5 or 1:1 | Free |
| Ad copy | A new headline and main text on Meta | Free |
A hook clip from your own clips or a product photo can be silent, and then it's free. A clip Goose makes always needs a spoken line, so it costs the clip and its line.
On the dashboard, Add a variation offers a photo of the product or a clip Goose makes. To use one of your own clips, ask your AI app. Write 3 more hooks hands the writing to it, and it can pick from your clips.
Captions and 16:9 aren't offered on uploads yet.
When the original hook already has words on screen, Goose suggests a hook clip, so the words don't overlap.
Every variation goes to Meta with exactly the original ad's headline, main text and button, unless that row tests the ad copy or the button. You never shorten your copy to fit.
Goose never clones the creator's voice. A new spoken line uses a Goose voice. A text hook keeps your video's own sound, and a hook clip with no line is silent.
